Who should choose Fractional Skin Resurfacing?

Men and women of all ages benefit from skin resurfacing for any of the following reasons:
  • Minimize wrinkles, laugh lines, and crow’s feet
  • Even out skin tone and texture for a more youthful look
  • Remove acne scarring
  • Remodel sun-damaged skin
  • Restore skin tone and texture damaged by smoking

How does Fractional Skin Resurfacing work?

Fractional skin resurfacing is the safest and most advanced treatment available for aging or sun-damaged skin. It can be applied to most areas of the body, including face, neck, abdomen, arms, legs, and hands. Microbeams of laser energy are passed through the skin and absorbed by water in the collagen beneath the surface, creating multiple, microscopic, thermal columns within the layers of skin. Together these micro-treatments accelerate new collagen growth, resulting in a natural process of "remodeling" the skin's surface by replacing the older wrinkled or damaged skin with new skin cells and fresh elastin. Elastin gives healthy skin its "bounce back" when pinched or pulled; this is significant for skin tone and wrinkle reduction.

What do the terms “Fractional” and “Non-Ablative” mean?

“Fractional” resurfacing treats only a fraction of the target tissue at one time, allowing for a natural process of cell replacement over time. Think of it as digital tissue editing.

“Non-ablative,” refers to its non-invasive nature, which is safe for all skin types, yields more consistent results and is more convenient for the patient than “ablative” procedures which strip off the epidermis (outer layer of skin). By avoiding risks associated with ablative methods, this procedure results in a natural skin renewal process with little or no downtime.

Is the procedure safe? Is it painful?

Fractional Skin Rejuvenation is the safest and most advanced treatment available because the depth and intensity of the laser energy is controlled precisely and can be customized to individual skin types and conditions. The Palomar Lux™ built-in cooling system protects the skin from the overheating that can result from many other resurfacing treatments. During treatment the patient feels only minor discomfort, like the momentary snap of a rubber band. To view a demonstration on our 4-minute introductory video, click here.

What can I expect after treatment?

Generally, you can return to work or other activities without recovery time. You may experience some initial redness (like mild sunburn), warmth, mild swelling, or tightness in the treated area. The skin may have a pinkish tone for a few days. You should use moisturizers and sunscreen for about ten days following the procedure. If you prefer to use a foundation makeup on top of the moisturizer, a mineral-based makeup is recommended.

How soon will I see results?

Most patients see improvement in the first week, with increasing results over a 6-week period. The natural skin remodeling process yields significant results, yet is more subtle than surgery because it occurs over a period of weeks. Studies suggest that a series of treatments at 3-6 week intervals produce the optimum effect.
