How does a laser work?

The word LASER is an acronym for Light Amplification by the Stimulated Emission of Radiation. Medical lasers use an intense beam of light to gently remove unwanted, damaged, or diseased cells without harming the surrounding healthy cells. The laser's energy may be delivered as a continuous wave of light or in pulses, depending on the treatment and the type of laser used.

How are lasers used at Bayside Vein & Laser Center?

In addition to using lasers in varicose vein surgery (EVLT), we also use lasers for the following aesthetic treatments:  removing spider veins, minimizing scarringstretch marks, and acne scarring, treating aging skin, and fractional skin resurfacing.

Are laser treatments safe?

Lasers have been used successfully in hundreds of thousands of aethetic treatments. Laser treatments performed properly, by a trained physician, are safe and effective. Laser technology allows the physician to customize the treatment to individual skin types and conditions for optimum results with lower risk.

Do laser treatments hurt?

Some patients say they feel a slight sting, like the snap of a rubber band on the skin, followed by the feeling of sunburn. Aesthetic laser treatments generally do not require anesthetics. However, some patients feel more comfortable with a local numbing agent like ice or an anesthetic cream.

What is IPL?

IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light energy. IPL treatments are non-invasive. The method utilizes different colors (wavelengths) of the light spectrum delivered at specific intensities in pulses, through a delicate computer-controlled handpiece.

What conditions can IPL treat?

Bayside Vein & Laser center uses IPL to treat the following:

Can IPL treatments remove unwanted hair?

Yes. IPL treatments can remove unwanted hair from any part of your body. The pigment in your hair's follicle absorbs the light energy from the IPL. This destroys the follicle so that it cannot grow. However, your hair grows in cycles, and only the hair that is visible can be treated. As a result, multiple treatments will be required for optimal results. Our patients love IPL treatments because once a follicle is destroyed, it will never grow again!

Does IPL treatment hurt?

Most patients describe it as a slight sting, like the snap of a rubber band on the skin, followed by the feeling of sunburn. Anesthetics are not necessary. The Palomar system has a built-in cooling device for patient comfort and on some procedures the intensity can be adjusted to individual comfort thresholds. We also use a cooling roller on the skin for added comfort.

Benefits of IPL treatments:

  • Minimal discomfort
  • No anesthetic needed
  • Quick and easy
  • No downtime
